In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Office of Child Abuse Prevention, in collaboration with the Child Abuse Prevention Center, explored the paradigm shift from mandated reporting to community supporting as a model for being responsive to the needs of children, families, and communities. This session kicked off Child Abuse Prevention Month with an overview from Safe and Sound of the issue brief “Creating a Child & Family Well-Being System: A Paradigm Shift from Mandated Reporting to Community Supporting”. This session explored:

After a thorough discussion of the real-world impacts of moving from mandated reporting to community supporting, explore the data and disproportionality outcomes associated with mandated reporting. This session includes:

  • Discussion of racial disproportionality across the Child Welfare System continuum that exemplifies the need to move upstream towards a community supporting approach
  • Identifying the “how to” in implementing programs and services that prioritize community supporting over reporting
  • Exploration of diverse partners’ integral role in the shift from mandated reporting to community supporting through a data-driven and equity lens

This session brought an exciting opportunity to engage with local county child welfare and other child- and family-serving professionals who are implementing innovative practices to support families, reduce referrals to Child Welfare, and prevent entries into foster care. This session explored:

  • Perspectives from local child welfare and other child- and family-serving agencies that are showing a demonstrated impact in reducing entries into foster care
  • How communities support families through prevention practices and authentic engagement
  • Insight from professionals on what is needed to make the shift to community supporting

This Child Abuse Prevention Month webinar series will end by providing the perspectives of partners across the child and family well-being network to understand what it will take to get to a community supporting model. Support for families at the community level takes a collective and cross-system approach that goes beyond child welfare and includes an array of professionals and community organizations and members to take part in preventing families from entering the child welfare system. This session includes:

  • An overview of a program with years of experience being in community and with community
  • Discussion with a dynamic panel of diverse professionals providing varying perspectives on how the shift from mandated reporting to community supporting can be implemented through a collaborative effort
  • We will end with a “Call to Action,” encouraging family- and child-serving professionals and communities to make a commitment in supporting children and families to be safe, well, and thriving.
