Where did the Protective Factors come from?

The Strengthening Families™ Protective Factors Framework from the Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) distills extensive research in child and family development into a core set of five Protective Factors that everyone can understand and recognize in their own lives. The Protective Factors Framework is the basis for a research-informed approach to strengthening families, enhancing child development, and reducing the likelihood of childhood abuse and neglect.

DID YOU KNOW? IN 2024, THE PROTECTIVE FACTORS GOT AN UPDATE!

In 2024, the Protective Factors Framework received a comprehensive update that addresses the changing societal landscape and root issues and challenges faced by children and families today. In addition to revising the definitions of all five Protective Factors, the CSSP reframed the action-oriented core values of the framework (Intersectionality, Family Voice, and Culture) and added two new key elements to each Protective Factor (Well-Being and Cultural Connectedness). These changes help child- and family-serving professionals remain responsive and effective in their support strategies. Download the full report here.
