Every conversation has the power to make a difference. In this training, you will learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and use the QPR approach: Question, Persuade, and Refer, to support someone in need.

You will gain practical skills to listen without judgment, offer support, and connect individuals to help. You do not need all the answers, just the willingness to show up and offer hope.

 

What is QPR?

  • The QPR Institute’s mission is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors through practical, evidence-based suicide prevention training. We believe education empowers people from all backgrounds to make a positive difference in someone’s life.

 

What is a QPR Gatekeeper? 

  • A gatekeeper is someone who is in a position to recognize a crisis and identify warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.

 

Participants will learn:

  • Increased awareness of stigma and understand suicide as a public health issue
  • How to recognize someone at risk for suicide
  • How to Question, Persuade, and Refer someone who may be suicidal
  • How to access local and national referral resources
  • How to offer hope and save a life

 

Who should attend: All staff of family resource centers (FRCs), Child Abuse Prevention Councils (CAPCs), community-based organizations, and other child- and family-serving systems.


IMPORTANT TRAINING INFORMATION:

  • This is an interactive training. Please be prepared to participate in activities such as group discussion, breakout rooms, and/or demonstration. Your training experience will be best with the use of a webcam, audio, and a training environment conducive to active participation.
  • This training will NOT be recorded.
  • This is a small-group training. Spaces are limited, and there may be a waiting list. Preference will be given to applicants from California. All applicants will be contacted by the week of September 14, 2026.
  • AI Assistants: California privacy laws mandate consent for recording conversations using AI applications. To ensure a respectful and secure learning environment for all participants, AI assistants are not allowed in CalTrin training.

Lana is a Project Coordinator at CalTrin with over 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, focusing on outreach, prevention, and training development. She holds a B.S. in Information Systems and an M.A. in Teaching and Learning with Technology. At CalTrin, Lana blends her technical expertise and passion for learning to design engaging trainings and deliver practical, accessible resources that support prevention work across diverse populations. Lana is dedicated to building connections and finding solutions that help families and communities thrive.
