Supporting Families with Motivational Interviewing: Group Coaching Series

This small group coaching series will reinforce the basic concepts of Motivational Interviewing and provide opportunities to practice skills and receive feedback during role play. The program will also utilize the MI Companion online training tool which covers Resisting the Righting Reflex, Understanding Motivation, Listening, Empowering, and Structuring the Conversation. Participants will conduct mock interviews and receive feedback prior to the start of the series and again at its conclusion.

 

Learners will:

  • Name 3 eliciting change talk questions that build motivation.
  • State 3 ways that reflective listening is important for engagement.
  • Demonstrate the ability to do reflective listening.
  • Identify 5 different strategies to empower members.

 

Who Should Attend: Direct service staff of family resource centers, child abuse prevention councils, and other child and family-serving organizations who are new to Motivational Interviewing. Priority will be given to small counties in California.

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SERIES:

  • This is an interactive training series. Please be prepared to participate in activities such as group discussion, break out rooms, and/or demonstration. Your training experience will be best with the use of a web cam, audio, and a training environment conducive to active participation.
  • This series will be recorded. The recordings will be available to registered learners within 2 days of the sessions.
  • This is a small-group training series. Spaces are limited and there may be a waiting list. Preference will be given to applicants from California. All applicants will be contacted by the week of July 31, 2023.
  • CalTrin “No Show” Policy. While CalTrin training is provided at no cost to learners, it requires significant financial and human resources to provide high-quality, small-group interactive training experiences. In addition, these trainings frequently have a waiting list. Selected participants who do not attend this training and do not contact CalTrin in advance may not be selected for future application-based small group trainings within the next 6 months.
  • Participants are expected to attend all sessions in this series. If you are interested in this training but cannot attend all sessions, please contact CalTrin to be placed on the waiting list for future trainings.
  • Coursework: Participants should expect to spend up to 1 hour/week on post-training exercises throughout the duration of the series.
  • By registering for a CalTrin training, you consent to be added to the CalTrin mailing list.

MEET THE FACILITATOR

 

Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Barnett received her Master’s of Social Work from Boston University and her PhD from the University of Southern California’s Department of Preventive Medicine’s Institute for Prevention Research. She is a lecturer in the California State University system, teaching research methods and statistics. Since becoming a member of Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2005, she has trained and coached nurse practitioners, nurse case managers, registered dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, health educators, counselors, and the occasional physician. She has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles on the application of MI with adolescent substance users, co-authored two book chapters, one on the use of MI in Obesity and one on MI in Social Work, produced two sets of specialized training videos, and developed the MI Companion, online MI practice modules. Her online modules have been adopted into multiple academic programs. She recently initiated the MI Skills Lab, which provides standardized clients for mock interviews so that trainees can easily practice their skills and receive feedback.
