TRAINING DETAILS:
When it comes to the idea of resistance, it is important to recognize that it happens…to all of us. Resistance can happen under many different circumstances. In this module, we will explore why resistance happens in the coaching context. Participants will learn to recognize indicators of resistance and identify ways to work with it.
Participants will be able to:
- Recognize that resistance can take several forms—cognitive, motivational, and obligation‑based—and be able to identify these patterns as normal expressions of a client’s internal experience
- Develop an accessible understanding of how resistance reflects the body and brain’s natural drive for safety, predictability, and autonomy, rather than defiance or lack of motivation
- Gain insight into how certain coaching habits can unintentionally activate a client’s protective system
- Be introduced to specific, coaching approaches that help clients soften resistance and re‑engage
Who should attend: Leaders of family resource centers (FRCs), child abuse prevention councils (CAPCs), community-based organizations, and other child- and family-serving systems. Foundational information and experience with coaching prior to the session is strongly encouraged.
