Sharenting children on social media: An emerging form of psychological maltreatment

October 1 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PDT

Parents posting images of their children on social media (sharenting) is a widespread and popular phenomenon. In some circles it is a marker of good parenting, despite being associated with many potential harms to children including identity theft, use of images in child sexual abuse materials, and emotional exploitation by parents who may gain attention and financial rewards for posting their children. This training from the TRANSFORM Research Center will present an overview of the problems associated with sharenting along with data from several recently completed studies of psychological maltreatment on TikTok, views of young adults’ consumption of sharented content and their experience being sharented.
