The Hidden Biases of Good People


This introductory webinar will provide foundational information on how implicit bias affects each of us and strategies to manage or reduce implicit bias.


Learners will:

  • Define implicit bias.
  • Describe what implicit bias looks like in the real world.
  • Identify the causes of implicit bias.
  • Examine how implicit bias is measured.
  • Understand how implicit bias affects the person who holds the bias.
  • Understand how implicit bias affects the attitudes and behaviors of the target group.
  • Review how implicit bias can be reduced or managed at the individual level.


Who should attend: All staff of family resource center (FRCs), child abuse prevention councils (CAPCs), and other child- and family-serving organizations. We welcome and encourage teams to attend this session!


If you are planning to attend The Hidden Biases of Good People, please schedule time (10-12 minutes) to take the Implicit Associations Test (IAT) 1-2 days before the webinar. You will reference the results as part of the training. Polling will be used to allow attendees to anonymously submit their results; you will not need to submit your results page. The groups results as a whole will be discussed.

Implicit Associations Test (IAT)

1. Go to the Project Implicit web site

2. At the very bottom left of the page, select “Take a Test.”

3. On the “Preliminary Information” page, at the bottom, select “I wish to proceed.”

4. When provided with the list of tests, select the Race (‘Black-White’) IAT

5. Print or save the results page as a PDF or screenshot to reference during the training.

Reverend Dr. Bryant T. Marks, Sr. is a minister, researcher, trainer, award-winning educator, and former member of the Obama Administration. He is the Founder and Chief Equity Officer of the National Training Institute on Race and Equity and a tenured professor of Psychology at Morehouse College.

Dr. Marks holds a B.A. in psychology and a minor in economics from Morehouse College, and a Master’s and Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan. He conducts research and professional development in the areas of diversity and implicit bias, Black male psychology and development, and personal passion and productivity. Dr. Marks is married to Dr. Kimberly Marks and father to Kim, Zion-Trinity, and Bryant II.
