Foundations of Gender-Inclusive Work Series

This foundational Gender Spectrum series consists of two workshops designed to establish basic understanding of gender diversity and approaches for application to professional practice. Through direct presentation, video clips of youth and others talking about gender, and group reflection and discussion, this series takes participants through a review of basics gender concepts and terminology and then describes concrete methods for applying the lens of gender diversity to mental health, social work and child welfare practices and contexts.

Series Learning Objective:

  • Gain basic understanding of gender diversity and approaches for application to professional practice.

  • This training series will be recorded. The recordings will be available to registered learners within 2 days of the trainings.

The first workshop in this series, Dimensions of Gender, will include presentation of key terminology and concepts, reflection on personal beliefs and experiences, perspectives from youth and caregivers, and an introduction to Principles of Gender Affirming Care.

Who should attend: All staff of family resource center (FRCs), child abuse prevention councils (CAPCs), and other family-serving organizations.


About the Speaker

Carla is a queer, non-binary writer, educator, and activist. Committed to equity and social justice, they have focused their life’s work on LGBTQ+ rights, inclusive education, youth work, and community organizing. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Carla is the proud child of an immigrant Cuban father and Nuyorican mother. They believe it is everyone’s birthright to thrive and they are expressly dedicated to the liberation and prosperity of QTBIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black/Indigenous, People of color) communities. They currently serve as the Manager of Professional Development at Gender Spectrum. Gender Spectrum is a national organization helping families and professionals create safe and equitable environments for transgender, non-binary, gender-expansive children and teens, while simultaneously establishing conditions that honor and celebrate the gender diversity of all young people.

Part two of this series includes:

  1. Training that builds on understanding of basic concepts of gender and applies them to counseling, social work, child welfare, and institutional settings.
  2. Overview of data about family affirmation and its relation to health and wellbeing outcomes for transgender and other gender-expansive youth.
  3. Discussion of strategies related to supporting transgender and other gender expansive youth in various contexts, including schools, at home and within their communities.

Who should attend: All staff of family resource center (FRCs), child abuse prevention councils (CAPCs), and other family-serving organizations who have attended Dimensions of Gender. If you are not able to attend one of the two Dimensions of Gender workshops, a recording of this webinar will be available.


About the Speaker

Joel Baum is the Senior Director for Professional Development at Gender Spectrum. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s education and training efforts. He facilitates trainings, develops curriculum, consults with caregivers and professionals to provide resources in service of a more compassionate understanding of gender and young people. A founding member and Director of Education for the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at UCSF-Benioff Children’s Hospital, he is frequently called upon to help institutions think more expansively about the gender diversity of all children and teens, and ways to create more gender inclusive conditions accordingly. An educator for more than thirty years, his career has been marked by a commitment to social justice and equity. First as an award-winning middle school science teacher and school leader, he has also served as a school district administrator in Oakland, CA, a school reform coach with the National Equity Project, and a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University, East Bay.
