Supporting Families with Motivational Interviewing: Group Coaching Series

 

This 5-week small group coaching series will reinforce the basic concepts of Motivational Interviewing and provide opportunities to practice skills and receive feedback during role play. The program will also  utilize the MI Companion, online training tool which covers Resisting the Righting Reflex, Understanding Motivation, Listening, Empowering, and Structuring the Conversation.

Learners will:

  • Name three eliciting change talk questions that build motivation
  • State three ways that reflective listening is important for engagement 
  • Demonstrate the ability to do reflective listening
  • Identify 5 different strategies to empower members

 

Who should attend: Direct service staff of family resource centers, child abuse prevention councils, and other child and family-serving organizations who are new to Motivational Interviewing. To be considered for this series, participants must have also attended Introduction to Motivational Interviewing on February 18, 2022 (Register Here).

BEFORE YOU REGISTER – Important Registration Information:

  1. This is a highly interactive training that will require you to use audio and webcam. Please be prepared to participate in activities such as group discussion and role play. Participants will be expected to complete online material and practice sessions between coaching sessions.
  2. This is a small group workshop and spaces are limited. Preference will be given to applicants from California. Please note that registrations will NOT be automatically approved. Selected applicants will receive a Zoom Confirmation message and we will contact waitlisted applicants by the week of February 28, 2022.
  3. Participants are expected to attend all 5 sessions. If you are interested in this training but cannot attend all 5 sessions, please contact CalTrin to be placed on the waiting list for future trainings.

 

Liz Barnett, MSW, PhD

 

Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Barnett is a lecturer in the California State University system, teaching research methods and statistics. Since becoming a member of Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2005, she has trained and coached nurse practitioners, nurse case managers, registered dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, health educators, counselors, and the occasional physician. She has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles on the application of MI with adolescent substance users, co-authored two book chapters, one on the use of MI in Obesity and one on MI in Social Work, produced two sets of specialized training videos. She also developed the MI Companion, online MI practice modules which have been adopted into multiple academic programs. She recently initiated the MI Skills Lab, which provides standardized clients for mock interviews so that trainees can easily practice their skills and receive feedback. She received her Master’s of Social Work from Boston University and her PhD from the University of Southern California’s Department of Preventive Medicine’s Institute for Prevention Research.
