Science of Social Support

Research demonstrates that one in four children and one in five adults in the United States are struggling with loneliness resulting in behavioral health conditions. Social connections comprise an important component of a happy and healthy life. All people need support in their lives, and especially people who are struggling due to mental health or substance use conditions. This presentation addresses how to work with those in need of expanding their social connections. Data on the benefits of social connections will be provided, in addition to understanding how a lack of connection impacts individuals mentally and physically. Techniques for assessment and development of social connections will also be shared.

  • This is a webinar-style training. This means that you will not be on camera and will not be able to see other learners. This training will not include breakout rooms. Opportunities to interact with the presenter(s) and other participants will be included.

Expanding Social Supports to Achieve Better Outcomes

Did you know that having social connection and support in your life makes you live 3.7 years longer than someone without support? Come to the Social Support workshop to learn what you can do to increase your lifespan and have a happier and healthier life. During this fun and interactive workshop, you will learn about why we all need support in our lives. You will also utilize hands-on tools to assess, plan for, and develop social connections and support. Practical tools and techniques will be shared during the training to promote the expansion of support systems and connections. Typically, system professionals do not recognize the development of support systems as an important component of their role. When families are struggling, access to support is often the answer to success. This training is ideal for anyone working with youth and families that could benefit from creating a robust support system.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

 

Dr. Radlauer-Doerfler is a leading expert in social connection and social support and uses her experience to create impact within communities, systems, organizations, and individuals. Her approach is collaborative, creative, and curious as she strives to educate utilizing unique avenues including media, stage production, video production, podcasting, and writing. She has more than 25 years of experience in behavioral health, public health, and organizational development. She is a national expert in behavioral health, social support, and social connectedness and uses this knowledge to further mental wellness. Her research on structural racism in the behavioral health field has led to the development of a national curriculum designed to create more equitable systems. She is passionate about addressing behavioral health challenges through social support and speaks widely on the topic.
