This overview of Motivational Interviewing will include a brief history of the method, a breakdown of the principles and skills, viewing and debriefing a demonstration video, and time for Q&A to explore application of the skills and moving forward.

MEET THE SPEAKER
Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Barnett received her Master’s of Social Work from Boston University and her PhD from the University of Southern California’s Department of Preventive Medicine’s Institute for Prevention Research. She is a lecturer in the California State University system, teaching research methods and statistics. Since becoming a member of Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2005, she has trained and coached nurse practitioners, nurse case managers, registered dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, health educators, counselors, and the occasional physician. She has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles on the application of MI with adolescent substance users, co-authored two book chapters, one on the use of MI in Obesity and one on MI in Social Work, produced two sets of specialized training videos, and developed the MI Companion, online MI practice modules. Her online modules have been adopted into multiple academic programs. She recently initiated the MI Skills Lab, which provides standardized clients for mock interviews so that trainees can easily practice their skills and receive feedback.
