SUMMARY:Stopping Substance Use Before It Starts: What Families and Courts Can Do
DESCRIPTION:Substance use doesn’t begin in adulthood—it often starts in childhood for youth exposed to trauma\, instability\, or parental substance use. Without early intervention\, risks can lead to lifelong struggles with addiction and mental health challenges. This session tackles the urgent challenge of preventing substance use before it begins. Drawing on the latest prevention science\, presenters will explore how collaborations\, such as family treatment court professionals\, and caregivers can disrupt the cycle by applying evidence-based strategies that strengthen protective factors and support healthy development. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Neurodiversity as Trauma-Informed Practice: A Training Model for Child Welfare Staff
DESCRIPTION:Neurodivergent families are overrepresented in child welfare systems because their communication\, sensory\, and regulation patterns are routinely misread as risk. This training integrates neurodiversity-affirming practices into trauma-informed work\, giving child welfare professionals concrete tools to recognize neurodivergent traits without pathologizing them and to adjust engagement strategies accordingly. \nBy the end of this session\, attendees will be able to: \n\nIdentify common ways neurodivergent communication\, sensory\, and regulation differences are misinterpreted as risk indicators within child welfare assessment and case planning\nApply neurodiversity-affirming\, trauma-informed strategies when engaging with neurodivergent children\, youth\, and caregivers\nAdjust case documentation and communication practices to reduce misreadings that can unnecessarily escalate family involvement in the system\n\nREGISTER HERE
