SUMMARY:Early Intervention 0-5 Training: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Most disrupted placements stem from behavior management difficulties.  Roughly half the children and youth in child welfare are dealing with neurological impairments from prenatal alcohol exposure that\, on top of trauma\, cause upsetting and disruptive behaviors–intolerable to many and uncontrollable by traditional parenting.  Most of these children are never diagnosed accurately with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) but instead carry the partially correct Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder\, Bipolar\, Learning Disability\, Oppositional Defiant Disorder\, and Autism Spectrum Disorder labels.  The brain dysfunction of FASD goes way beyond any one of these categories\, causing tremendous upheaval in the individual and the family.  When FASD is not recognized (or at least hypothesized)\, interventions misfire and anger\, shame\, blame\, and chaos prevail. \nIf the pattern of prenatal alcohol damage is recognized\, the behavior reframed accurately\, and more useful supports implemented\, life becomes simpler and the chances for a successful transit to adulthood increase.  Family stress is reduced and professional sense of efficacy is increased. \nThis training will help participants gain a foundational understanding of FASD and its impact across all aspects of development in order to better assess and provide services for children and youth who are dealing with neurological impairments from this disorder. \nAfter attending this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe FASD and its impact across the lifespan on all aspects of development\nRecognize the pattern of FASD in children and adults\nIdentify the impact of FASD on placement disruption and tailor interventions to support family and individual stability\nUnderstand how to proceed in the absence of formal diagnosis\nAccess screening tools for both exposure and impact of prenatal alcohol\n\nRegister Here \nThe format of this virtual training will be on Zoom.  You will receive login information via email once your enrollment has been received.

SUMMARY:Parenting While Black 2025: Black Parents and Black Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Join the Brazelton Touchpoints Center (BTC) as we dive into a conversation about raising Black children in today’s world\, and how the daily acts of parenting—both joyful and challenging—affect our mental wellbeing. We will explore how our parenting journeys carry generations of wisdom\, trauma\, and resilience. We will talk about strategies that consider cultural expectations and current realities to shape our parenting approaches and mental health. \nREGISTER HERE \nSpeakers: \nMr. Deutron Kebebew\, Founder and Executive Director of MENtors Driving Change for Boys\, Men\, and Dads. With over 20 years of experience in the non-profit sector\, he previously served as Program Manager and Project Director for the Supporting Father Involvement research and community initiative\, in collaboration with UC Berkeley and Yale University. A dynamic and visionary leader\, he has successfully led community outreach and development programs\, connecting local residents with innovative human services. Mr. Kebebew is recognized as an organizational leader\, community advocate\, and collaborative ambassador\, dedicated to driving positive change for boys\, men\, fathers\, and families. \nDr. Quenette Walton\, Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Dr. Walton is a licensed clinical social worker and has over 20 years of practice experience in school social work\, child welfare\, and with community-based organizations providing in-home individual and family therapy and parent coaching services to children and families involved with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). In her role as a therapist with DCFS\, she was challenged to think critically about the ways in which race\, class\, gender\, and discrimination impact mental health for Black women across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and with various mental health conditions such as depression. Working with the children and families involved with DCFS has informed her research by pushing her to think about identifying alternative treatment approaches\, translating the best scientific evidence into the best clinical practice\, and supporting Black women’s access to culturally appropriate mental health services. Her practice and research are grounded in the tenants of social justice in which she places a premium on understanding the intersection of race\, class\, gender\, context and environment on mental health. \n

SUMMARY:Beyond Corporal Punishment: The No Hit Zone Strategy for Reducing Child Abuse
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will challenge the myths and highlight the harms associated with corporal punishment\, examining the deep-rooted social norms that sustain its use. Physical discipline remains one of the most significant risk factors for child abuse in the United States and across many cultures\, where traditional beliefs and practices often influence parenting styles. Understanding corporal punishment as a public health issue is crucial in preventing child maltreatment. Family-serving professionals may feel uncomfortable addressing the topic of spanking\, but many parents are relieved to learn that they have positive\, culturally sensitive alternatives. By fostering dialogue around safe\, effective\, parenting strategies\, we can promote the health and well-being of all children. This webinar will also explore the role of No Hit Zones as a practical and inclusive solution to reduce corporal punishment and create safer environments for children\, regardless of cultural background. \nInterpretación al español | CEUs available!  \nLearn More & Register

SUMMARY:Breaking the Cycle: How Economic Supports Strengthen Families and Break Down Barriers
DESCRIPTION:Family economic well-being goes beyond merely having money; it includes access to essential resources like safe housing\, nutritious food\, and health care\, as well as the emotional security that comes from financial stability. When families have what they need\, they experience less stress\, create more stable home environments\, and can better support their children’s healthy growth and development. This is particularly important during pregnancy and the formative first 1\,000 days of a child’s life. \nJoin BUILD/PN-3 Capacity-Building Hub for the next Whole Child\, Whole Family\, Whole System Webinar Series session. We will explore how economic supports\, rather than short-term fixes\, can provide a foundation for long-term stability. Economic supports include tax credits\, raising the minimum wage\, cash transfer programs\, or home visiting programs that help families meet their basic needs. The webinar will feature state leaders who will highlight the power of systemic change in breaking cycles of hardship and ensuring that families and communities can truly thrive. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:The Path to Racial Equity: Addressing Disparities for Transition Age Youth in Child Welfare
DESCRIPTION:Join Alliance for Children’s Rights for a virtual policy summit focused on actionable solutions to address racial disparities and disproportionalities for transition age youth in child welfare. The Alliance for Children’s Rights report\, Supporting Their Journey: The Path to Racial Equity in Child Welfare for Transition Age Youth\, and accompanying policy and practice recommendations\, builds on our first report\, The Path to Racial Equity in Child Welfare: Valuing Family and Community\, published in 2021\, addressing racial disparities and disproportionalities in the child welfare system. This second phase of our Whole Families/Whole Communities campaign examines the racial disparities and inequities transition age youth\, those aged 16-24\, experience while in and exiting the foster care system and the ways in which those inequities are driven by systemic factors\, such as implicit bias\, socioeconomic inequality\, and inadequate access to culturally responsive services. \nThis virtual policy summit will focus on targeted policy and practice reforms aimed at combatting the impacts of systemic disparities and disproportionalities\, fostering stability\, and expanding economic and educational opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of transition age youth. We will be joined by a lived experience expert sharing their insights on barriers and challenges transition age youth face. Participants will engage in breakout sessions to explore the supports and interventions needed for youth in foster care to thrive. \nREGISTER HERE
